US National Security Adviser Robert O’Brien on Friday held a phone conversation with Afghanistan’s President Ashraf Ghani and Abdullah Abdullah, chairman of High Council for National Reconciliation.
During the conversation, it was emphasized that the intra-Afghan negotiations should begin immediately, according to a statement from the president’s office.
O’Brien said that US supports a united, sovereign and democratic Afghanistan which would not turn into a safe haven for terrorists again, the statement said.
The sides also expressed concern about increase in Taliban violence and called for it to stop, according to the statement.
High Council for National Reconciliation also issued a statement saying the sides discussed reduction of violence, completion of prisoner swap and immediate start of intra-Afghan negotiations.
