US President Donald Trump on Wednesday expressed hope that the release of US and Australian nationals held by the Taliban would lead to ceasefire in Afghanistan.
“We join families of Kevin King & Tim Weeks in celebrating their release from Taliban captivity. Thanks to President Ghani for his courageous support. Let’s hope this leads to more good things on the peace front like a ceasefire that will help end this long war. Proud of my team!,” Trump tweeted.
The Taliban released King and Weeks more than three years after kidnapping them from outside the American University of Afghanistan in Kabul, where they had been working as teachers.
The duo were freed in return for the release of three senior Taliban commanders including Anas Haqqani.
