India and Afghanistan signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Tuesday for construction of Shahtoot dam on Kabul River basin.
The agreement for the project, worth $286 million, was signed between foreign ministers of the two countries in a virtual event that was participated also by President Ashraf Ghani and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Ghani thanked India for assisting Afghanistan. He said that Afghanistan can be the gate for India.
He said that the dam will quench thirst of two million residents in Kabul and will be used for irrigation of agricultural land.
“The several projects that India has assisted in Afghanistan has helped our friendship and brought the two countries closer,” Modi said. “Today, the signing of MoU on Shahtoot Dam in Kabul will be based on our strong friendship.”
He said that no external force can stop development in Afghanistan or stop friendship between Afghanistan and India.
Modi called for ceasefire in Afghanistan and emphasized on Afghan ownership of peace process.
