Afghanistan clinched historic Test victory against Bangladesh beating the hosts by 224 runs on Monday.
Racing against time to complete a win with less than four overs left in the rain-hit match,Afghanistan bundled out the hosts for 173 in their second innings.
Captain Rashid Khantook six for 49 in the second innings, totally claiming 11 in the match. He had hit fifty in the first innings.
Rashid was declared player of the match, a title which he dedicated to Mohammad Nabi who retired fromTest but will continue to play white-ball cricket.
It was Afghanistan’s second Test win in just their third Test matches. They are the joint quickest team to the landmark, equalling Australia who picked up their second Test victory all the way back in 1879.
“We are new in this format, total credit goes to the coaching staff and the players for this victory,” Rashidsaid after the match.
“We had the best preparation for this game. The only thing (I said) from my side was enjoy your bowling and enjoy your batting, that’s what matters in test cricket. Everyone applied themselves, it was a total team effort.”
The match saw Rahmat Shah scoring 102 in the first innings, the first century in the format by an Afghanistan batsman.Asghar Afghan hit 92 as Afghanistan posted 342 in that innings.
Bangladesh were dismissed for205 in their first innings. Afghanistan then made 260 in their second innings to set Bangladesh a398-run target to chase.
Once Afghanistan reduced Bangladesh to 136-6 in the second innings, the fate of the match was almost decided but for the intervention of bad weather.
Heavy showers allowed little play through the final day leaving Afghanistan with about 18.3 overs in the final session to take the remaining four wickets and force a result. Rashid took three out of those with just 3.2 overs remaining.
