The Taliban’s commitment to cut their ties with al Qaeda must be upheld, US commander of international troops in Afghanistan has said.
“There is debate on their ties with al Qaeda and we will continue watch those. There are very strict commitments there and they must be upheld,” General Scott Miller told 1TV.
Miller also said that the violence is “too high” across Afghanistan.
He said that the humanitarian crisis in Parwan following floods was another reason why violence needs to come down.
“We have an opportunity to bring all sides together to talk. The violence needs to come down so that we can have the appropriate path to peace,” Miller said.
He said that all sides are fighting very hard. “Afghans are killing Afghans and that needs to stop. Unfortunately, there is civilian casualties involved in the fighting, but this is something that needs to be solved politically.”
Meanwhile, Acting Defense Minister Asadullah Khalid said that the Taliban, contrary to their commitment, have kept the level of violence high.
He, however, assured that Afghan forces are capable of defending their country as he said that they carry out 90 percent of the operations.
