Afghanistan and Iran have agreed to finalize a document for comprehensive cooperation within the next three months.
It came as an Afghan delegation led by Acting Foreign Minister Haneef Atmar met with Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif in Tehran on Sunday.
During the meeting, the two sides discussed the latest developments in bilateral relations, including political, economic and cultural collaborations, security and border cooperation, the issue of Afghan nationals and refugees, transport ties, and other issues of mutual interest, Iran’s foreign ministry said in a statement.
Zarif expressed sorrow over the recent incident for Afghan nationals near the border with Iran, saying that human traffickers must be blamed for the tragic events as there is not enough monitoring at the borders.
Zarif said the evacuation of Afghan border checkpoints, which has shifted all the responsibilities to Iranian border guards, has led to such incidents.
He expressed hope that the Afghan government would take more care to prevent the “destructive activities of the ill-wishers who seek to disrupt the two countries’ relations.”
Gran Hewad, a spokesman for Afghan foreign ministry, said that the Iranian side informed about latest progress in investigation of incidents involving deaths of Afghans in Iran.
They agreed to take measures to prevent such incidents in future and the Iranian side assured of good behavior toward the Afghan nationals.
They agreed to strengthen border between the two countries, jointly fight against human traffickers and prevent illegal movements.
They agreed on extension of residential permits for Afghan refugees and issuing identification cards and passports.
