A company has illegally cut down several trees on road to airport in Kabul, officials said, triggering frustration of the residents.
NTC, a foreign private company, felled 24 trees on road to the airport taking advantage of the dark night, said Sher Shah Amiri, Kabul Municipality’s general director forgreenery.
The company cut down the trees in order to install security cameras, the official said, adding it was carried out without coordination with the municipality.
The move has angered residents.
“The company should be heavily fined so that nobody could dare to cut down trees. The trees are grown with lots of difficulties for our city to become beautiful,” said Hussain Begzad.
Harron Munib said cutting trees felt like cutting his legs. He called for fining the company and revoking of its license.
Mohammad-u-din, a municipal worker tasked to take ofgreeneryof the area cried as he said he had been taking care of the trees as his children.
Based on laws, the company should pay a fine of six million afghanis and should face legal action, the municipality said.
Meanwhile, Kabul Municipality criticized that it requires permission from security institutions one day before getting its tanker to the target area for watering.
The trees are cut only meters away from a police checkpoint.
Efforts to reach the company for comment were unsuccessful.
The Interior Ministry said that it would seriously investigate the case.
