US President Donald Trump said on Monday he was in “no rush” to withdraw American troops from Afghanistan.
Trump said this after being asked about any timeline for troop withdrawal from Afghanistan amid ongoing ninth round of Washington’s peace talks with the Taliban in Doha.
“No timeline. Whatever it is. And we’re in no rush,” Trump said at a press conference before he met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of a G7 summit in France.
Trump, however, said that the US military role in Afghanistan has turned into a police force.
“I mean, we’re there. We’re really a police-keeping force more than anything else, frankly,” Trump said.
He claimed that the US could win Afghanistan war in a very short period of time, but “I’m not looking to kill 10 million people.”
He said that the US was working along with the Taliban, with the government and other people.
“We’ll see what happens,” Trump said.
