Afghan president Ashraf Ghani has nominated his former national security adviser Hanif Atmar to be foreign minister.
Atmar served as national security adviser under Ghani for three years before he resigned his post in 2018 and became critical of Ghani.
He registered himself as a candidate in 2019 presidential election, but withdrew from the race later.
Atmar will act as caretaker of the foreign ministry until his confirmation by the parliament.
A statement from the president’s office described Atmar as an influential political figure who led the ministries of rural rehabilitation and development, education and interior ministry.
