Afghanistan reported its first case of the new coronavirus on Monday, saying a man in the western province of Herat had tested positive in an outbreak that originated in China.
Speaking at a press conference in Kabul, Minister Ferozuddin Feroz declared emergency situation in the province.
Feroz said that the coronavirus case was among three suspected cases reported in Herat. He said that their blood samples were tested in Kabul and one came back as positive.
Feroz said that the patient was a 35-year-old man, who had come from Iran’s Qom. He said that the patient was isolated in a healthcare center.
The case is reported a day after Afghanistan announced ban on travel (ground and air) to and from Iran, where dozens of coronavirus cases have been reported and several have died from it.
