US President Donald Trump said on Sunday he would sign a peace deal with the Taliban if the ongoing one week of reduction in violence works out.
“If it works out over the next less-than-a-week, I would put my name on it too,” Trump told reporters before he left for India. “It is time to come home.”
Trump expressed optimism that the reduction in violence will work out.
“It has been holding up. It is a day and a half. Now we will see what happens. But people want to make a deal and I think the Taliban wants to make a deal too. They are tired of fighting,” Trump said.
The negotiated period of reduction in violence ends on coming Friday, and if successful, the sides will sign a peace deal the next day.
