Afghan Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah on Tuesday questioned President Ashraf Ghani over the release of Khalilullah Ferozi, a former bank manager convicted of multimillion-dollar fraud.
Addressing his supports at an election campaign gathering in Kabul, Abdullah criticized the release of Delawar Khan, a former Senate adviser who was arrested over links with militants.
Abdullah suggested that such moves are part of election campaigning.
“Give answer Mr. President,” Abdullah said.
Afghanistan’s upcoming presidential election is scheduled to be held on 28th September.
Abdullah said that Afghans should focus on holding a transparent and fair election.
He warned that failure to do so would result in formation of a government which won’t be tolerable.
Ferozi was arrested over the Kabul Bank scandal in 2010 that became a test of the Afghan government’s ability and willingness to address widespread corruption.
The president’s spokesman said that Ferozi was moved into house arrest after the judiciary system looked into his health.
He said that the move was to help ensure that Ferozi would stay alive to repay the hundreds of millions of dollars. He rejected claims that the move was in exchange for campaign donation.
