US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad said late on Wednesday that “we are approaching an important stage in the Afghan peace process.”
Khalilzad said this after meeting with President Ashraf Ghani, Chief Executive Abdullah, former president Hamid Karzai, female activists and other political leaders in Kabul for consultations following renewed talks with the Taliban.
Calling the visit productive, the diplomat said that “we’re approaching an important stage in the Afghan peace process.”
“We discussed efforts to achieve reduced violence and pave the way to intra-Afghan negotiations,” Khalilzad said on Twitter.
Khalilzad resumed talks with the Taliban earlier this month, which had been halted by President Donald Trump in September over a deadly attack in Kabul.
