“We finished Daesh,” Afghan President Ashraf Ghani said visiting eastern Nangarhar province on Tuesday.
The president praised people’s uprising forces and national security forces for defeating Daesh in the province.
He said that Daesh’s defeat in Nangarhar was not only a major achievement for Afghanistan, but also the region.
Meanwhile, local officials said that more than 800 Daesh fighters and family members had surrendered in recent weeks.
They included also foreigners including from Pakistan, Iran, Tajikistan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Maldives and Uzbekistan.
Ghani said that women and children of Daesh should be dealt with according to Afghan tradition and culture.
He called on Nangarhar residents especially those who have been victim of Daesh to share their views and suggestion on the fate of surrendered fighters.
He said that countries should take responsibility for their own citizens who fought for Daesh.
