Afghan parliament speaker, Mir Rahman Rahmani, on Wednesday accused mainstream media and social media of tarnishing the legislative body’s image.
The allegation comes after police stopped vehicles of some lawmakers in the city on Friday night, which led to an encounter and the acting interior minister being questioned in the parliament overnight.
Many on social media praised police action and criticized the lawmakers who claimed they were insulted by police.
Parliament speaker Rahmani said angrily criticized the media over coverage of the event, claiming they were tarnishing the legislative body’s image and were conspiring against it.
Nai, a group supporting open media in Afghanistan, however, said that the parliament speaker should prove his claim otherwise he has to offer apology.
Some journalists said that the parliament speaker’s anger on media was actually due to media’s coverage of slack off in the body.
The Interior Ministry has recently launched campaign to seize illegal vehicle registration plates and unlicensed arms and remove tinted film on vehicles’ windows.
