Alice Wells, State Department deputy assistant secretary for South and Central Asia, met with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani in Kabul on Tuesday, discussing election, peace and regional relations.
During the meeting, the diplomat praised successful holding of presidential election, saying the vote was important for strengthening democracy in Afghanistan, a statement from the president’s office said.
For his part, Ghani said that the independence of Afghan electoral commissions and their decisions should be respected.
He also said that candidates should avoid making premature claims of victory.
The president said that there is comprehensive consensus for dignified and sustainable peace, adding it is the priority of the current and next government.
