The United Kingdom on Sunday urged Afghan presidential candidates and their supporters to avoid premature claims of victory and unsubstantiated allegations of fraud.
British Embassy in Kabul urged all stakeholders to respect due process and the rule of law, Independent Election Commission and Electoral Complaints Commission to fulfil their responsibilities impartially, efficiently and transparently.
“All candidates and their supporters should refrain from premature claims of victory or unsubstantiated allegations of fraud,” the embassy said on Twitter.
The twice-delayed Afghanistan’s presidential election was held on Saturday.
Earlier, UK deputy ambassador in Kabul while visiting a polling center, expressed hope that the new technical measures will significantly reduce the potential for fraud.
“We have no interest in spending our money to support a fraudulent process,” the diplomat said. “We want to see a clean, credible, fair and transparent process.”
