Sustainable solution in Afghanistan cannot be reached by military means alone, a top NATO official said on Saturday.
“We all agree that it is clear that a sustainable solution in Afghanistan cannot be reached by military means alone,” Stuart Peach, chairman of NATO Military Committee, said at the Military Committee Conference in Slovenia.
The comments come after US President Donald Trump abruptly cancelled peace talks with the Taliban and ramped up military operations against the group.
Peach said that NATO will continue to train and advise Afghan security forces. We make them stronger, so that they can fight international terrorism and create and sustain security and stability in their own country.
“Our military presence is there to create the conditions for peace,” he said.
Earlier, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on Saturday that he had a phone call with Afghan president Ashraf Ghani.
He said that NATO Allies and partners remain fully committed to supporting Afghanistan with training and funding and helping to create the conditions for peace.
