Former Afghan president Hamid Karzai on Thursday expressed opposition to holding presidential election before reaching a peace deal with the Taliban.
Speaking at a press conference in Kabul, Karzai called on candidates to withdraw.
He said that holding election at the moment is not in the interest of the nation.
The comments come as the Taliban have held seven rounds of talks with the Untited States and are apparently close to an agreement. Washington hopes for peace deal before September 1.
Afghanistan’s presidential election is scheduled for September 28 and campaign period has already begun.
At the conference, Karzai rejected the idea of forming an interim government.
He said that he had told Ghani to continue as president until peace.
