Afghan forces have retaken control of Yamgan district in northeast Badakhshan province, four years after it fell to Taliban militants, officials said Monday.
The provincial governor’s office said that the country’s national flag was flying in the government headquarters in the district.
Defense Ministry in a statement said that the Taliban suffered heavy casualties in air and ground operations. Many more militants surrendered, it said.
This is second district in Badakhshan that has been reclaimed by Afghan forces in a week.
Earlier, Warduj district was freed five years after it was seized by the Taliban.
