Pakistan has called on the United States and the Taliban to re-engage for Afghan peace after US President Donald Trump cancelled talks with the militant group.
Trump unexpectedly cancelled secret talks planned for Sunday with the Taliban’s major leaders at the presidential compound in Camp David, Maryland. While announcing the decision, he cited an attack in Kabul last week that killed an American soldier and 11 others.
Pakistan’s foreign ministry in a statement condemned violence and called on all sides for restraint and commitment to pursue peace process.
“Pakistan has been facilitating the peace and reconciliation process in good faith and as a shared responsibility, and has encouraged all sides to remain engaged with sincerity and patience,” it said.
The statement reiterated that there is no military solution to the Afghan conflict.
“Pakistan will continue to monitor the developments. Pakistan reiterates its principled policy stance that there is no military solution to the conflict in Afghanistan and urges that both sides must re-engage to find negotiated peace from the ongoing political settlement process. Pakistan looks for optimised engagement following earliest resumption of talks,” the statement said.
