A total of 2,582 cases of violence against women were registered in Afghanistan during the first half of 2020, the country’s ministry women’s affairs said on Monday.
This comes as 5,327 cases of violence against women were registered in second half of 2019.
Spozhmay Wardak, deputy minister of women’s affairs, told a press conference that the decline in number of cases was as victims could not report incidents of violence due to lockdowns over coronavirus pandemic.
According to the official, 18 murder, seven suicide, eight serious injuring and one public execution cases were registered over the past six months in Afghanistan.
Herat, Faryan, Sar-i-Pul, Nangarhar, Baghlan, Takhar, Farah, Kandahar, Balkh, Samangan and Bamyan recorded most cases of violence against women, the official said.
Meanwhile, the Attorney General’s Office said that 1,179 cases of violence against women were investigated in the first six months of 2020.
