A Taliban commander who was released from prison has returned to battlefield despite having pledged not to do so, provincial intelligence chief said.
Rohullah began to command a Taliban unit threatening security of Kabul-Jalalaabad highway after his release.
He was among 22 militants who were killed and injured in clash with security forces in Qarghayi district, said Ghulam Haidar Rahmanzai, provincial NDS director.
The clash began after the militants attacked the security forces on Monday morning injuring two forces, he said.
Taliban casualties included 16 deaths and six injuries.
Afghan government has released 4,015 Taliban prisoners so far following the group’s agreement with the United States that calls for release of up to 5,000 prisoners before intra-Afghan talks.
The government is refusing to release militants who are convicted of major attacks.
“The reason why we don’t trust their promises so much is that when we release them, they return to the battlefield,” said Manzoor Stanikzai, police chief of Laghman.
