At least 953 media workers caught coronavirus across Afghanistan, a media advocacy group said on Tuesday.
Most of those infected were journalists and males, said Mujib Khelwatgar, the chief executive officer of Nai media watchdog.
Most of the infections were registered in central zone, including Kabul, Parwan, Kapisa Panjshir, Logar and Maidan Wardak provinces,
Five media workers died from the virus, he said.
Khelwatgar said that the number of coronavirus cases among media workers could have been much higher, as there is a social taboo associated with the virus.
He said that there were around 10,000 media workers across Afghanistan, and 10 percent infections very low as compared to other sectors.
He urged managers of media outlets to pay attention to the health of employees.
“No report, no media work is as valuable as health of a journalist,” Khelwatgar said.
