Six people were killed in violence during a protest over aid distribution in Afghanistan’s western Ghor province on Saturday, officials said.
Nineteen more were wounded in the protest which happened outside the governor’s office, the Interior Ministry said.
It said that irresponsible armed individuals among people were attacking government institutions and security forces, forcing them to open fire into air.
Two police and four others including a journalist were killed in the violence. 10 police and nine protesters were wounded, the ministry said.
Amnesty International urged the Afghan authorities to “immediately order an independent and effective investigation into use of unnecessary and excessive force” that led to the killing of civilians.
The Interior Ministry said that a team would travel from the center to Ghor for investigation.
