US President Donald Trump and Qatari leader Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani agreed in a phone call on Wednesday on the importance of the Taliban reducing violence in Afghanistan, the White House said in a statement.
The two leaders also agreed on the importance of continuing discussions on prisoner releases in Afghanistan, the statement said as reported by Reuters.
Taliban attacks in Afghanistan are increasing despite the group signing a peace deal with the United States in February.
The deal stipulated the release of up to 5,000 Taliban prisoners and 1,000 Afghan government prisoners by March 10 when intra-Afghan talks were scheduled to begin.
However, the process was delayed and the government and Taliban have released 432 and 60 prisoners each respectively so far.
