The European Union delegation in Afghanistan in a statement on Thursday called on parties to the current political negotiations to reach an agreement with “the highest sense of urgency.”
“There is a need to start the peace process as soon as possible,” the statement said. “The wellbeing of the Afghan people and the broader interest of the Nation must come first while Afghanistan is facing continued insecurity and dramatic new health risks.”
The statement warned that each day that passes without a consolidated governmental team “exposes the Afghan population to greater dangers, undermines the credibility of the democratic institutions and discourages European partners.”
“Time for unity is now!,” the statement concluded.
President Ashraf Ghani and his political rival Abdullah Abdullah are engaged in a feud over leadership after a disputed election last year.
