Taliban militants have captured Yamgan district in northeastern Badakhshan province, provincial council said on Saturday.
This is first district to fall to Taliban after the group signed a peace deal with the United States a month ago.
The militants overran the district after fighting Afghan forces for several hours.
Taliban had been in control of Yamgan district for four years until September last year.
