Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has issued a decree for release of around 10,000 prisoners as a precautionary measure against coronavirus.
Speaking at a press conference, Afghan Attorney General Farid Hamidi said that the release decree doesn’t involve those who have been imprisoned for crimes against domestic and external security.
It involves women, children, people suffering from difficult-to-treat diseases and people aged above 55.
Hamidi said that Herat, which is Afghanistan’s epicenter of coronavirus, will be given urgency in implementing the decree.
Ahmad Rashid Totakheil, the director of prisons and detention facilities, said that the prisoners will be released within next 10 days.
