US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has arrived in Kabul, a source told 1TV on Monday.
Pompeo is visiting Afghanistan to try to move forward a US peace deal signed last month with the Taliban, the Associated Press reported.
The US signed a peace deal with the Taliban late last month. However, implementation of the deal has faced delays particularly that clause which requires prisoner releases before intra-Afghan talks. There is also disagreement over on negotiating team.
Pompeo’s trip comes despite the coronavirus pandemic, at a time when world leaders and statesmen are curtailing official travel.
It comes amid a political crisis in Afghanistan with both President Ashraf Ghani and his rival Abdullah Abdullah having held inauguration ceremonies following a disputed election.
