The number of confirmed cases of coronavirus in Afghanistan has risen from 34 to 40, the country’s health ministry said.
The six new cases were detected in Herat (3), Farah (2) and Ghor (1), according to Wahidullah Mayar, a spokesman for Public Health Ministry.
Afghanistan has one confirmed death attributed to coronavirus.
Most people with the virus have a travel history outside Afghanistan.
To date, testing has been small scale with fewer than 400 COVID-19 tests conducted which may account for the relatively low number of confirmed cases given the high number of border crossings with Iran where there are thousands of cases, the United Nations said.
Speaking at the border, Toby Lanzer, the UN’s deputy special representative for Afghanistan, said that coronavirus is the new frontline for the country.
