NATO is concerned about the political turmoil in Afghanistan and urges an inclusive solution, chief of the alliance said on Thursday.
“We are of course concerned about political turmoil we see in Afghanistan today,” NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said at a press conference to launch 2019 annual report.
He said that to make sure that the US-Taliban deal is implemented, “we need a united Afghan government that can be part of a political negotiating process and that can make sure we have Afghan-led and Afghan-owned peace process.”
“We urge all political forces in Afghanistan to find a solution, an inclusive solution and to make sure that we are able or they are able to implement the agreement with Taliban.”
Stoltenberg said that NATO was implementing plan to reduce troops from 16,000 to around 12,000 within 135 days in line with US reduction.
“With 12,000 troops in the NATO mission in Afghanistan, we will be able to continue to provide support, training and maintain the same structure of the training mission as today, with also presence outside Kabul.”
