As many as 38 patients fled hospital in western Herat province on Monday, including one who tested positive for coronavirus, local officials said.
Provincial health director, Abdul Hakim Tamana, said that the incident happened as angry patients attacked health workers and left the hospital through its gate despite police presence there.
He said that those who fled including 36 men and two women. The person who was suffering from coronavirus was from Daikundi.
The official said that 17 patients were still in the hospital.
Provincial police spokesman, Abdul Ahad Wali Zada, however, rejected fleeing of patients from the hospital, saying some were discharged following consultation with doctors.
Afghanistan has confirmed 21 cases of coronavirus in the country, 12 of which are in Herat.
