Monday’s crash of US military aircraft in Afghanistan’s central Ghazni province happened due to technical problems, Afghanistan’s civil aviation authority said on Wednesday.
Earlier, the Taliban militant group claimed that the plane had been brought down by them.
Ghulam Masoom Masoomi, ACAA’s director for air traffic control, however, said that the aircraft crashed due to engine failure.
He said that the pilot of the aircraft was trying to make emergency landing at the airport of Sharana, the capital of Paktika province, which neighbors Ghazni.
He said that ACAA was in contact with the pilot of the aircraft from the very beginning of the problem and they were guiding it to the nearby airport.
The US on Tuesday recovered the remains of two personnel from the crashed Bombardier E-11A aircraft.
While the US military said that the cause of the crash was under investigation, it stated that there was no indication that it was caused by “enemy fire.”
The type of the aircraft remained unclear for hours, with senior Afghan officials claiming it belonged to Ariana Afghan Airlines.
Mirwais Mirzakwal, deputy head of Ariana Afghan Airlines, said that ACAA should inform the public about such incidents immediately.
