Afghanistan will become completely self-reliant in chicken production in the next four years and will not need it from outside, officials asserted on Tuesday.
Afghanistan consumes 294,000 tonnes of chicken annually. Of the number, 219,000 tonnes of chicken are produced in domestic farms while 75,000 tonnes are imported from outside.
Akbar Rustami, a spokesman for the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock said that 70 new farms will be built by March next year.
He said that the new farms will cost $12 million.
The ministry has also launched a project which involves building small farms for chicken production for women.
So far, 28,000 such farms have been built and 5,500 more will be built this year.
