At least 14 Afghan forces were killed when Taliban militants attacked a security checkpoint in northern Jowzjan provicne early on Monday, an official said.
Five others were wounded in the attack which happened around 3:30a.m., targeting a checkpoint in Hyderabad area of Faizabad district, said Abdul Maruf Azar, a spokesman for provincial governor.
Two other forces went missing following the assault, he said.
In response, Afghan forces killed seven Taliban insurgents and wounded three others.
Taliban attacks on Afghan forces have increased in recent days.
The latest violence comes a day after Taliban killed 17 members of people’s uprising force in northern Takhar province.
On Saturday, insurgents killed 10 army soldiers in a bomb attack in southern Helmand province.
