Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi telephoned Afghan President Ashraf Ghani on Tuesday and invited him to visit India.
In a series of tweets, Ghani said that Modi congratulated him for winning in preliminary presidential election results.
Modi said that as a friend, neighbour and the world’s largest democracy, India thoroughly supports democracy in Afghanistan.
He said that India supports a peace process which is owned, led and controlled by Afghans.
Modi said India also stands with Afghanistan in the fight against terrorism.
For his part, Ghani appreciated continued support of India which he said was not only a good neighbour and friend but a strategic friend. Ghani said that Afghanistan was committed to implement the Constitution.
During the conversation, Modi invited Ghani to visit his “second home” India. During the visit, regional and international issues will be discussed.
Ghani thanked Modi for the invitation and said that he would visit India at an appropriate time.
