A Canadian man who was held for nearly five years by the Taliban has been arrested in Canada for 15 criminal charges including sexual assault.
The charges against the 34-year-old man who was rescued with wife and children in Pakistan late last year, includes eight counts of assault, two counts of sexual assault, two counts of forcible confinement and one count of uttering death threats.
He was arrested on December 30 and is due to make brief court appearance on Wednesday.
“Mr. Boyle is presumed innocent. He’s never been in trouble before … We look forward to receiving the evidence and defending him against these charges,” Boyle’s lawer, Eric Granger, said.
Boyle and his wife Caitlan Coleman had been abducted while travelling through a mountainous region of Afghanistan. Their children were born in captivity.
The family was rescued following a car chase in northwestern tribal region in Pakistan.
After arriving in his home country, Boyle said that one of his children had been murdered and wife was raped while in captivity, a claim which was rejected by militants.
