Pakistan on Monday ordered immediate suspension of issuance of on-arrival visas to foreign nationals, local media reported.
The decision came apparently to prevent ‘regularities’ in the database.
Announcing the ban, Pakistan’s Interior Minister Chaudry Nisar Ali Khan called for revision and updating of visa rules and regulations and introduction of online visa regime for transparency, minimising discretion and expediting the process of issuing visas.
He said that Pakistan issued 34,000 on-arrival visas since 2007.
For the first time in history of Pakistan, foreign airlines were fined for violation of visa policy and were asked to take back passengers without visa at their own cost, the minister said.
