First Afghan lad to play at Indian Premier League is flying high in the tournament as he removed Brendon McCullum, Suresh Raina and Aaron Finch of Gujrat Lions on single digit scores to help Sunrisers Hyderabad beat Gujarat Lions in their second game on Sunday.
Rashid Khan was eventually declared Man of the Match.
Sunrisers, who won the toss, fielded first, restricting Lions to 135-7 as their rivals played all the mandated overs.
As he did in the opener match, Rashid Khan offered breakthrough for Sunrisers, picking up the wicket of McCullum in the fifth over while he scored only 5.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar removed Jason Roy in the next over before Rashid Khan claimed third man Finch on 3 in his next over.
Rashid also toppled Lions’ captain Raina while he made only 5 and his wickets were all in the form leg before wicket (lbw).
Rashid Khan also removed Dhawal Kulkarni in the form of run out and he became highest wicket-taker of this season’s IPL.
In the chase of 136-run target, skipper David Warner made 76 not out while Moises Henriques hit 52 as Sunrisers defeated their rivals by nine wickets and with 27 balls to spare.
Following the match, Rashid said: "It's a positive message back home in Afghanistan. Their players have helped me. The crowd here have given me a lot of support and love. Happy to be a part of the Sunrisers. The coach and the captain asked me to bowl whenever I'm comfortable. I told them I'm happy to bowl at any stage. I thought batsmen weren't going to read my googlies and tried it, and it worked."
Captain of the team David Warner said: "Fantastic effort by the bowlers, credit to Rash. I wanted to try him in the first six, and he said 'give me the ball.' He's a superstar in the making, adds great dynamics to our team. With Fizz unavailable, he's stepped up and filled the gap. One of our key strengths isn't just keeping teams to low totals but also take wickets. The one thing we try and do well is to try and chase it down early if it's a low total."
