Afghan forces destroyed four major heroin laboratories in an operation overnight in eastern Nangarhar province, official said Wednesday.
The Interior Ministry in a statement said that the heroin producing labs were destroyed in Nakor Kheil and Kachar villages of Khogyani district.
During the special raid, Afghan counter-narcotics special police unit discovered 7,500 kilograms of morphine, 810kg of ammonium chloride, 500 liters of liquid opium and other chemical substances used in making heroin, the statement said.
The statement noted that opium is one of the major sources of terrorism financing, adding the country’s forces are seriously fighting to tackle its cultivation, smuggling and processing.
Afghanistan is considered to be world’s top producer of opium. According to the United Nations, opium production increased 43 percent in the country as eradication efforts decreased due to increasing insecurity.
Helmand province is the largest producer of opium in the country, with 80,000 hectares cultivated with poppy last year.
