Contract for construction of third phase of Kamal Khan Dam to be signed soon, Ministry of Energy and Water said Wednesday.
Addressing a ceremony marked for International Water Day under theme of Water and Waste Water, Ali Ahmad Osmani, the Minister of Energy and Water said: "In the near future we will signed the contract of Kamal Khan Dam which is one of the important water dams in the country since last few decades," Osmani said.
Kamal Khan Dam is on Helmand River has been subject to dispute between Afghanistan and Iran.
The project started in 1996 but faced delays over war and didn’t resume until 2011. Its second phase was completed last year.
The next phase is estimated to cost nearly $80 million which will be channelled through government budget.
With its completion, the dam is expected to generate 10 megawatts of electricity and irrigate 100,000 hectares of agricultural land.
