Former Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Sunday praised Russia's 'constructive' role in Afghanistan.
Meeting with Russian envoy in Kabul, Alexander Mantisky, Karzai supported Moscow’s role and interest in restoring peace in Afghanistan and developing the country, according to a statement from Karzai’s office.
Calling war and terrorism a threat to the entire region, Karzai added that the support of neighbouring countries and ‘powerful’ Russia was necessary and effective in peace talks with the Taliban.
For his part, the Russian envoy reiterated that Moscow will continue to support Afghanistan including on restoring peace in the country.
Russia has reportedly stepped up engagement with the Taliban in what is seen by Afghan and U.S. officials as worrying sign.
However, Moscow denies that they provide aid to insurgents insisting their contacts with the Taliban are aimed at bringing the Taliban to the negotiation table.
Moscow is set to host a meeting with Pakistan and China on Afghanistan on December 27.
