A university lecturer in northern Afghanistan was arrested Thursday allegedly for insulting media outlets, officials confirmed.
Abdul Maroof Tafakuri, who worked in Takhar University, was held by intelligence operatives of National Directorate of Security in Takhar, a spokesman for provincial governor said.
Sunnatullah Temor added that the lecturer was being investigated over the allegations.
His arrest comes three days after the lecturer on social media described some TV channels in Afghanistan as “devils who create discord among people, makes them pimps and finally lead them to hell.”
In reaction to his comments, Afghan media advocacy group Nai said it was concerned about the “impolite” comments posted by the university teacher.
The group called on the government to suspend his official position and job and refer him to the court.
